Following the recent announcement by former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, of his decision to step down from the governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, for the Imo State Governorship election coming up in November, the rumour mill have been spinning, with the former number six citizen of the country, linked to moves to other political parties to pursue his ambition to govern Imo State.
The most recent rumour was that Ihedioha was on his way to the ruling All Progressives Congress APC.
Ihedioha's spokesmen are yet to address the issue of whether the former lawmaker would remain in the PDP or move to another party.
Recall that Ihedioha was announced as the winner of the 2019 General Elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, before the Supreme Court upturned the victory and announced Senator Hope Uzodimma as the rightful winner of the election.
Ihedioha and the National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu Samdaddy, have been locked in fierce battle over who gets the ticket of the party, to face Uzodimma at the General Elections.
Following the resignation of the former National Chairman of the party Ayu, Ihedioha threw in the towel and yesterday, Senator Samuel Anyanwu Samdaddy emerged the winner of the primaries.
A recent rumour of a possible defection to Labour Party by the Aboh Mbaise born politician, was met with stiff resistance from Obidients who recalled that Ihedioha had once attacked the party when he was hoping to be in the good books of the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
ImoTimes met up with a close associate of the sacked governor and enquired whether the rumours of a likely defection to another political party was true but the associate, who didn't want his name mentioned, was of the view that Ihedioha was most likely going to stay in the PDP.
"I don't think he's going anywhere," the associate stated. "All these rumours are unfounded. The most laughable is the one about going to APC. That would be political suicide for him unless he has reached an understanding with Uzodimma to hand over power to him afterward. Personally, I won't trust such agreement. Ihedioha will stay in PDP and fight for the good of the people. He's going now where as far as I'm concerned."
Other party faithfuls we talked to seemed to share the same views about Ihedioha and the defection rumours but until INEC published the final list of candidates for all the political parties contesting for Douglas House without Ihedioha being on them, a last minute move can not be ruled out yet.
